Extends clinically integrated partnership; affirms NEQCA’s unique value in market

BRAINTREE, Mass. (October 7, 2013)—New England Quality Care Alliance (NEQCA), a network of almost 1,800 community and academic physicians affiliated with Tufts Medical Center, and Southcoast Physicians Network (SPN), announced today that Southcoast will extend their affiliation with NEQCA in a multi-year contract.

Southcoast Physicians Network (SPN), a group of more than 325 physicians (including 90 primary care physicians, and 235 specialists), is affiliated with Southcoast Health System and includes a number of physician practices throughout Southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

“For the past three years, our physicians and most importantly, our patients, have benefitted from our membership in NEQCA,” said Keith A. Hovan, President and CEO of Southcoast Health System and Southcoast Hospitals Group. “We are pleased to be renewing this contract that enables our physicians to continue to have preferred access to the specialists and services at Tufts Medical Center, when tertiary care services are required.”

“Among our collaborations, our doctors have partnered with NEQCA to improve quality of care for our patients—working hard to improve rates of preventive care visits, and to provide more comprehensive care for our patients with diabetes,” said Cynthia Wicks, President of Southcoast Physicians Network. “Our new agreement allows for us to continue our successful partnership and find new, collaborative ways to enhance our relationship and improve care for our region.”

The physicians of the Southcoast Physicians Network will continue to refer to their primary referral hospitals within Southcoast Hospitals Group: Charlton Memorial Hospital in Fall River, St. Luke's Hospital in New Bedford and Tobey Hospital in Wareham. SPN physicians will also continue to have integrated access to Tufts Medical Center for highly specialized care when their patients have complex medical needs that require the most advanced care.

“This continues to be an exciting and dynamic time in health care,” said Dr. Jeffrey Lasker, President and CEO of New England Quality Care Alliance. “We are proud to announce another important renewal for our network.  We believe our efforts to achieve the Institute for Healthcare Improvement’s Triple Aim of improving the health of populations, enhancing individual patient care and reducing the rise in healthcare costs are working.  Southcoast’s decision affirms this and the unique value the NEQCA network provides to our physicians and patients.”

“Renewals by innovative physicians groups like Southcoast show that NEQCA brings unparalleled resources to community practices, enabling physicians to respond most effectively to changes in the healthcare system,” said Michael Wagner, MD, Interim President and CEO of Tufts Medical Center. “At Tufts Medical Center, we look forward to continuing to work with our physician colleagues at Southcoast and their excellent local hospitals.”
